Spacing for deck post lights is set by the posts you already have, not by an ideal distance in inches. The method is to measure the run, count the posts, and choose a repeating interval that lands on both end posts, because a pattern that terminates on a lit post at each end always reads as symmetrical. Why symmetry matters more than distance
The eye is very good at detecting a broken rhythm and very poor at judging absolute spacing. Nobody looking at a lit deck rail can tell whether the caps are seven feet or nine feet apart. Everybody notices when one gap is twice the size of the others, or when the run starts on a lit post and ends on a dark one.
This flips the usual approach. Instead of calculating a target distance and then finding posts near it, you start from the fixed post positions and find the pattern that divides them evenly. The posts are the constraint. The spacing is the output.

A worked example
Take a deck with a 30-foot rail run and posts every five feet. That is seven posts and six gaps.
Lighting every post uses seven caps, spaced five feet apart. Even, dense, and appropriate for a deck people sit on.
Lighting every second post gives a clean result because six gaps divided by two is three, a whole number. That means posts one, three, five, and seven are lit, four caps at ten feet apart, with both ends covered. This is the efficient option and it still reads as deliberate.
Lighting every third post does not work here. Six divided by three is two, so posts one, four, and seven are lit, which is technically symmetrical but leaves fifteen feet of unlit rail between caps. On a deck that is too sparse; on a long boundary fence it would be acceptable.

A deck is used at close range. People walk its edges, sit next to its rails, and use its stairs after dark, so the lighting has a functional job beyond appearance. Every post, or at worst every second post, is right for a deck perimeter.
A fence is viewed from farther away and usually from one side only. Longer sightlines compress the gaps visually, so an interval that would look sparse on a deck looks continuous across a yard. Positions that get a light regardless of the pattern
Some posts should be lit whatever the arithmetic says, because they carry safety or structural meaning.
- The top and bottom of every stair. A change in level is the one place on a deck where dark costs more than looks. Light both ends of the flight even if it breaks the interval.
- Both end posts of every run. This is what makes a pattern terminate cleanly instead of trailing off.
- Corner posts. Corners tell the eye where the shape of the space turns. An unlit corner makes a perimeter look unfinished.
- Gate posts. People aim for gates in the dark, and a pair of lit gate posts is more useful than four lit line posts.

Check sun exposure against your spacing plan
An interval that puts caps on shaded posts is a worse plan than an uneven interval that puts them in the sun. Each cap needs 6-8 hours of full, direct sunlight for a full charge, and what matters is open sky above the post top rather than sun reaching the fence at ground level.
Walk the run at mid-morning and mid-afternoon, look straight up from each intended position, and mark any post that sits under an eave, a mature tree, or a neighboring structure.
