Condensation Inside the Lens or a Loose Cap: Field Fixes for Solar Post Lights
Fog on the inside of a lens after a cold night is usually harmless condensation that clears by afternoon. Standing water inside the housing that survives a warm, dry day is a compromised seal. A cap that wobbles on its post is a separate problem with a separate fix, and mixing the two up leads people to caulk a fixture shut when the actual issue was the post top underneath it.
Condensation or water intrusion? Tell them apart first
The difference is time, not appearance. Both look like moisture behind the lens.
Condensation forms when warm, humid air inside the housing meets a cold surface. It appears overnight or after a temperature swing, sits as a fine even mist, and disappears within a few hours of sun. It is normal in any sealed outdoor fixture that experiences a daily temperature cycle, and it does not shorten the life of the light.
Intrusion looks like droplets, streaks, or a visible pool at the low point of the housing. It appears after rain rather than after a cold night, and it is still there at the end of a warm dry day. Intrusion means water has a path in, and that path needs to be found rather than sealed over.

Where moisture actually gets in
Four paths account for nearly all of it, and only one of them is the fixture's fault.
- A hairline crack in the housing. Usually from impact, a dropped cap, or ice being pried off a panel. Cracks are the one path that means the fixture itself needs replacing rather than adjusting.
- An over-tightened fastener. A screw driven past its seat deforms the plastic around it and opens a gap at the skirt. This is the most common self-inflicted cause.
- A twisted or forced fit. Pushing a base onto a post that is slightly too large stresses the skirt outward. It seats, but the corners no longer meet the housing squarely.
- Water arriving from below. Water that soaks a post top and then evaporates upward into the fixture is not ingress in the IP-rating sense at all. It is a post problem showing up as a light problem, and it is why a wet post top matters so much.
Fixing a loose or wobbly cap without trapping water
A cap that rocks on its post is doing two bad things at once: it is inviting wind to lift it off, and it is holding a small reservoir of water against the end grain of the post.

Why sealing the whole base makes things worse

A full perimeter bead of caulk feels like the thorough solution and produces the opposite result. Once the base is sealed all the way around, the joint between cap and post has an entry path it did not lose — moisture still arrives through the wood itself and through microscopic gaps in the cure — but no longer has an exit. Water that gets in stays in, against the post end grain, indefinitely.
Post caps are designed to shed water, not to hermetically seal a post. The gap at the bottom of the skirt is the drain. Corner dabs, a snug base, and a flat post top achieve dryness. Continuous caulk achieves a slow rot problem you cannot see until you remove the cap.

FAQ
Is condensation inside the lens a defect? Not by itself. Any sealed housing containing air will show condensation when the outside temperature drops quickly. The test is persistence — mist that clears with a few hours of sun is normal physics, and moisture that is still present at the end of a warm dry day is not.
Can a fixture that took on water be saved? Often, yes. A thorough 24 to 48 hour dry-out with the battery removed, followed by cleaning the contacts, brings most fixtures back. What cannot be fixed is a cracked housing, since a crack is a permanent entry path.
Should new caps be sealed at install as a precaution? No. Seat them on a flat, sanded post top with the correct base size and leave the bottom of the skirt open so the joint can drain and dry. Sealing preemptively creates the moisture trap you were trying to avoid.
Does a wet post top affect how well the light works? Indirectly. Persistent moisture under a cap raises humidity inside the joint and gives the fixture more opportunity for internal condensation, and long-term it damages the post. Pick the fixture that looks worst and take it off the post. Check the post top for flatness, look for a hairline crack in the skirt, and confirm which base size is fitted.
