How to Ensure Proper Fitment and Prevent Moisture Intrusion Under Solar Post Caps

Proper fitment is what keeps moisture from sitting under a solar post cap: a square top, the matching base, and a complete plastic rim. Solar Post Cap Lights are IP44 6-pack heads for 4x4, 5x5, and 6x6 posts, with true-size bases from 3.5 inches to 5.5 inches on wood, vinyl, and plastic. IP44 means the light can take rain, snow, frost, and sleet. It does not mean a cocked cap can pond water into end grain. Seat the 5.8 x 5.8 x 3.54 inch housing as a lid that sheds, not as a bowl.

The leak is the joint, not the IP rating

Rain hits the cap and should run off the rim onto the sides of the post. If the base is the wrong size, two corners carry the housing and the other two dump water into the top. That is moisture intrusion. The eight warm white SMD LEDs still glow at 15 lumens until the tray or the post fails; the fence problem started at the joint.

Wood drinks from a dished top. Vinyl hollows fill if a leftover factory lid and a new solar cap stack into a gutter. Plastic posts need the same complete rim. Multiple bases exist so the listed true sizes actually close.

The guide to protecting fence post tops from moisture and rot is the timber map. This page is the cap-fit map.

Fitment steps that close the rim

Measure the true top in both directions. Pick the 4x4, 5x5, or 6x6 base that matches 3.5, 4, 4.5, 5, or 5.5 inches. Cut or sand a crowned wood top square. Replace punky fiber; screws and friction both fail in rot. On vinyl, remove a factory cap if this housing replaces it. Do not perch on a ridge.

Set the cap and press evenly. There should be no rock. A 360° head that rocks is also a 15-lumen head aimed at the sky. Auto on/off and the 6-8 hour full-sun charge still need a level panel.

Do not run a bead of caulk over the solar face or the dusk sensor. If a tiny exterior bead at the wood rim is local practice, keep it off the plastic optics and off any drain path the top still needs.

What IP44 does and does not cover

IP44 is splash from any direction on the outdoor plastic head. Rain, snow, frost, and sleet are the listed weather. Standing water in a birdbath on the post is not. A pressure washer jammed at the seam is not. Dry the tray if condensation shows on the lens, reseat the housing, and confirm the rim.

Each head has a 1000mAh Ni-MH AA. Water in the tray is a cell problem. Water in the post is a rot problem. They are different jobs. LED life of 30,000 hours assumes a dry diode, not a swamp.

A 6-pack gives six independent lids. One wet post does not excuse skipping the other five tops. Walk the line after the first hard rain.

Moisture paths under a solar post cap

| Path | What it looks like | Fitment fix | | --- | --- | --- | | Wrong base | Rock, two-corner perch | Match 3.5 to 5.5 inch true size | | Dished wood | Puddle under the lid | Cut square; do not create a bowl | | Stacked vinyl lids | Gutter at the seam | One cap on the remaining plane | | Open rim in wind | Spray under the housing | Complete the rim; reseat level | | Caulk on the panel | Dead charge, still wet joint | Keep optics clear; seal only if needed at wood |

After a storm, inspect the lid, not the lumen number

A fogged lens or a drip on the post below the cap is a fitment note. Wipe the panel so the next clear day can fill the cell. Reseat any head that shifted. Fifteen lumens of warm white marker light should return when the glass is clear and the tray is dry. Buying a flood will not dry a newel.

DIY install is $0. Replacing a rotten post later is the expensive path. The cheap work is the square cut and the matching base before the first rain.

Frequently asked questions

Does IP44 stop water from entering the post?

No. IP44 rates the light for rain and sleet. The post stays dry when the cap sits as a complete, level lid.

Should the underside of the cap be caulked shut?

Do not trap a water dish. Seat the matching base. Any sealant stays off the panel and sensor.

Why is there condensation inside the lens?

A damp tray or a poor seat can fog the lens. Dry, reseat, and confirm the rim. See also loose-fit fixes if the cap still rocks.

Can a loose 4x4 base sit on a 6x6 newel?

No. Use the matching base in the 3.5 to 5.5 inch range. A gap is a leak.

Is plastic worse than metal for keeping rain out?

These heads are plastic IP44 outdoor caps. Fit and a square top matter more than switching materials.

What to do next

Tape every post top, square any dish, and seat Solar Post Cap Lights on the matching 4x4, 5x5, or 6x6 base so the plastic rim is complete. After the next rain, look for drips at the joint and fog in the lens. Reseat before blaming the 15-lumen spec. A lid that sheds is the moisture plan.
